Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG)
The Family Medicine Interest Group is an organization open to all medical students, regardless of their areas of interest in medicine. Multiple skills workshops are held throughout the academic year in partnership with Utah residency programs. FMIG participates in other activities, such as socials, physician panels, and University of Utah interest fairs. In 2026, they received the Leaders in Professional Development award from the Recognized Student Organizations at the University of Utah. Students can learn more about FMIG activities by joining Campus Connect.
Every Spring, the Family Medicine Interest Group hosts its Family Medicine Interest Fair. Residency programs from Utah, Idaho, and Colorado represent their institutions with tables in Alumni Hall at the Health Sciences Education Building to engage with students from the University of Utah School of Medicine, NOORDA, and Rocky Vista. Attendees have the opportunity to ask questions about each program, collect swag, and take photos with the University of Utah’s mascot, Swoop.

Shadowing
Family Medicine offers shadowing opportunities to those who meet the requirements below:
The Shadower must:
- be over 17 years of age,
- obtain and submit proof of required immunizations, and
- complete the Shadow Application, which includes the Non-Employee HIPAA Training Module and University of Utah Health Visitor/Non-Employee Confidentiality and Security Agreement.
Shadow expectations:
- The Shadower will be strictly limited to observing patient care and will not participate in patient care in any way.
- When the Shadower is present during patient care, the patient must be notified in advance and have the opportunity to object. When a patient consents to have a Shadower present during a care encounter, this consent must be documented in the patient’s chart.
- Any protected health information (PHI) shared or communicated while the Shadower is present must be the minimum amount necessary to facilitate appropriate care delivery.
- The Shadower may not retain any written or electronic PHI (e.g., notes or photocopies) from the shadowing engagement or disclose any PHI they observed or heard while participating in the shadowing engagement.
- Shadowing is limited to 12 hours per department per year.
