Staying Local: Family Medicine Residency Graduates Continuing Careers at University of Utah Health

After completing the University of Utah’s Family Medicine Residency Program earlier this year, three members of the Class of 2025 chose to continue their careers within the University of Utah Health system. We’re proud to announce that Prashanth Fenn, MD; Caitlin Henry, MD; and Sarah Hourston, MD will remain part of the U of U Health community.

Each will serve in distinct roles, continuing to bring innovation and compassionate care to the local community and the populations they serve. Below, Drs. Fenn, Henry, and Hourston reflect on their residency experience and why they chose to stay at the U.

Prashanth Fenn, MD | Family Medicine Hospitalist for the Department of Internal Medicine

Why the U for residency: “I liked the fact of U of U Health is a huge catchment area for the surrounding states, and I would see various patient backgrounds and pathology to have a broad range and foundation as clinician.”

What made the program unique: “I appreciated the significant inpatient medicine training I received, which is why I feel confident to work as a hospitalist after residency.”

Why stay with U of U Health: “I know the system well and have developed a good community. I enjoyed the academic hospitalist group at U of U Health, and they have many great mentors. As a family medicine trained hospitalist, I will be primarily working at Holy Cross Jordan Valley as a Nocturnist.”

Caitlin Henry, MD | Clinical Attending at Sugar House Health Center for the Division of Family & Community Medicine

Why the U for residency: “I was looking for a place that could give me perspectives about academic medicine and community medicine, and this program provided both.”

What made the program unique: “We provide a lot of the gender affirming care in Salt Lake City and the state. I found it to be valuable in my training and now as an attending I’m able to provide that care independently. I also felt really supported by the attendings and they treated me like a true colleague. Everyone was truly there to help me progress in my career and medical knowledge.”

Why stay with U of U Health: “During residency I learned that we have access to so many resources for our patients in the university system. Resources like cooking classes or intensive lifestyle programs are very important for my job of helping to take care of my patients.”

Sarah Hourston, MD, ND | Assistant Professor for the Department of Internal Medicine and Adjunct Faculty for the Division of Family & Community Medicine

Why the U for residency: “I chose the University of Utah Family Medicine Residency program because it had a balanced, well-rounded curriculum. Since it is part of a large university, there were also lots of opportunities to seek out training in areas of special interest.”

What made the program unique: “Some of the experiences I found most rewarding were being able to work at the HOME Program for people with disabilities. Not many health systems have clinics that specifically support primary care for people with disabilities. The HOME Clinic allows one-hour visits for providers to spend time with their patients and has many integrated support services built in. Another rewarding experience was getting to work at the Rapid Access Contraception Clinic. I was impressed that when women’s health care access was being threatened that one of our faculty, Dr. Erika Sullivan, created this clinic to increase birth control access for patients.”

Why stay with U of U Health: “I chose to stay in the University system because I love working with learners in different settings and here, I will be able to work with residents and medical students in clinic and in the hospital between the departments of internal medicine and family medicine.”
