University of Utah Family Medicine Residency Collaborates with CHC Residency to Expand Learning Opportunities

September 17, 2025

For years, the University of Utah’s Family Medicine Residency has partnered with Community Health Centers (CHC). Residents rotate through CHC clinics and gain experience in various specialties, particularly labor and delivery. This year, the well-established collaboration between the center and the residency has evolved as CHC welcomed its own inaugural residency class.

To support shared learning and professional development, the two residency programs have started co-hosting didactic sessions—educational sessions that supplement clinical training through lectures, journal clubs, and interactive discussions. These focused sessions are designed to deepen medical knowledge and critical thinking skills.

Kara Frame, MD, associate program director for the University of Utah’s Family Medicine Residency, notes that the collaboration reflects a longstanding tradition of CHC providers contributing to the residency didactic series. “This collaboration formalizes their involvement,” she said. “Our residents can connect with CHC residents, faculty, and providers to learn other perspectives. I think it’s working well and has been a positive experience for everyone so far.”

As core faculty across both programs join efforts, they are enriching residents’ training experiences and cultivating a supportive learning community. This collaboration expands beyond professional networks and ultimately enhances the quality of care for the patients they serve.
