On June 26, 2026, the Division of Family & Community Medicine gathered at the Cleone Peterson Eccles Alumni House to celebrate the graduation of 10 family medicine residents, one pharmacy fellow, one sports medicine fellow, and four obstetrics fellows.
The ceremony opened with remarks from Department Chair John Barrett, MD, who congratulated the graduates and expressed pride in their commitment to pursuing careers in primary care.
“I believe that primary care is going to have its time to shine, now and even more so in the next five to 10 years,” Barrett said.
Associate Professor and former program director Kirsten Stoesser, MD, delivered the keynote speech, encouraging graduates to invest in relationships that will sustain them throughout their careers.
“Your network of people will be there to support you and—even if you stumble and falter—will be there to help you re-center and re-direct. Medicine can be hard and, at times, even isolating, and we need to be there for each other,” she said.
Stoesser emphasized that a strong professional network is valuable not only for the support it provides but also for the opportunities it creates to provide support to others.
“One of the most enriching things about networking is not only how it has helps you, but also how it allows you to pay it forward by providing support, references, and connections for others,” Stoesser said.
Faculty advisors then introduced each graduate, sharing personal reflections and memorable moments from their mentorship.
The ceremony continued with the presentation of awards, recognizing individuals who have led by example and demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning. Program Director Kara Frame, MD, offered special recognition to the chief residents for their exceptional leadership, service, and dedication to the residency program.
The graduates were celebrated not only for completing a rigorous chapter of their medical training but also for demonstrating their capability to care for patients and serve communities in the years ahead. Their accomplishments reflect the Division of Family & Community Medicine’s commitment to developing family physicians who will help shape the future of primary care.
