Behavioral Health Opportunities
Core Experiences
Recognizing that Family Medicine physicians serve as the primary mental health care providers in the United States, our program emphasizes training in behavioral health skills, including:
- Four-week behavioral health required rotation, including experiences in:
- Adult psychiatric crisis management
- Trauma-informed care of children and families
- Interpartner violence prevention
- All residents will spend time in the FM faculty clinical psychologist’s clinical, honing skills in differential diagnosis of psychological presentations.
- Robust in-clinic support for managing behavioral health concerns, including:
- In-clinic consultations and referral to integrated psychology and social work services
- Collaborative care services with psychiatry to assist with depression treatment
- Access to statewide psychiatric consultation service
- In-clinic pharmacist support for medication questions
- Integrated training in medically assisted treatment of addiction.
- Frequent didactic trainings on behavioral health topics such as psychiatric medication management, motivational interviewing, suicide risk management, and trauma-informed care.
Additional Opportunities
For residents with increased behavioral health care, the following supplemental educational activities are available:
- Additional elective experiences in:
- Child and adult psychiatry
- Psychiatric consult-liaison services
- Adult psychiatric crisis management
- Adults and children with developmental disabilities
- Behavioral sleep management
- Trauma-informed care
- Communication skills
- Participation in research projects based on multiple funded grants focusing on behavioral health training and trauma-informed care.
- Opportunities to co-review nationally submitted journal articles.
