MSPH Application

The Division of Public Health admits Master of Science in Public Health students for Fall admissions once a year. All application materials must be received by the Division of Public Health by January 15th. No late applications or application material will be accepted after that deadline.

Required Documents

Primary application through SOPHAS

    • Official transcripts for US/Canadian applicants
      • WES evaluation and unofficial transcripts for international applicants
    • GRE scores (required)
    • Three letters of recommendation
    • Statement of purpose that identifies initial faculty mentor
    • Current Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)
    • English proficiency for international applicants  (TOEFL/IELTS)

Secondary online application through Slate

    • Unofficial transcripts
    • English proficiency for international students  (TOEFL/IELTS)

Online application - Applicants must submit an application through the SOPHAS system and the University of Utah’s Slate system. Applicants will receive information on applying at the University of Utah during the SOPHAS application process.

Transcripts - You must have an official transcript from each institution from which you earned college credit uploaded (including the University of Utah) to the online SOPHAS application.

If you are admitted into the MSPH program: You must submit an official transcript from each institution from which you have earned college credit (except the University of Utah) to the Office of Admissions. Please see the Office of Admissions website for details on how to submit official transcripts. If you fail to submit official transcripts, you will be unable to register for classes.

Three letters of recommendation - Required for each masters applicant; the recommendation letters should come from persons familiar with the applicant's academic and professional capabilities, achievements, work experience and/or personal qualities—not family or friends. There is no specific format for these letters.

Statement of purpose - The statement, not to exceed 500 words, should include comments relevant to public health degree(s), reasons for choosing public health as a future career area, any previous relative work experience, and how the training will facilitate your career goals.

Current Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV) – Resumes and CV’s should be professional and up-to-date.
 

Other Requirements

Testing

General Graduate Record Examination (GRE) - MSPH applicants must submit General Test scores from the GRE no older than 5 years; no exceptions.

The GRE is required for applicants without a terminal degree (MD or PhD) earned in the U.S., with scores no older than five years (University of Utah school code 4932 University of Utah Division of Public Health SOPHAS).

TOEFL international students -  Spring 2014 semester, applicants must have a minimum TOEFL score of 80 iBT (550 pBT) or better, or a minimum IELTS band score of 6.5 or better (minimum score requirements are subject to change); must submit TOEFL scores at least  iBT 61 or pBT 500 or an IELTS score of at least 5.0

Personal Interview

May be required, including international applicants. Telephone interviews may be conducted and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Mentoring

Initial Faculty Mentor - Review the research areas of faculty to identify those working in your area(s) of interest.  Please identify these faculty members and describe your research interests in your statement of purpose.  Applications will be reviewed by the nominated faculty members as part of the admissions process.  

Check Your Application Status

Applicants are responsible for monitoring the progress of their applications to ensure all required documents, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and other information is received by the deadline. The SOPHAS and Slate online applications allow applicants to track their application status by logging back into the system with their PIN and password and clicking “check status” in SOPHAS or “check your application” in Slate.
