Policy & Advocacy Opportunities
Core Experiences
All residents will have the following experiences.
- Didactic instruction in State and National advocacy.
- Introduction to the Utah Academy of Family Physicians’ (UAFP) staff and organization.
- Opportunity to participate in “Legislative Days on the Hill” with UAFP CEO and lobbyist Maryann Martindale.
Additional Opportunities
For residents with increased interest in Policy and Advocacy, the following supplemental educational activities are available.
- Participate in the National Conference for Constituency Leaders (NCCL) held every spring in Kansas City, MO. Learn about AAFP policy-making process, leadership training, and networking.
- Participate in the Robert Graham Center Visiting Scholar Program in Washington, DC. The Visiting Scholars program is regularly booked 12 months in advance. Interest should be stated as soon as possible, no later than two years in advance.
- Become a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) or a UAFP Resident Member of the Board of Directors.
- Apply for membership of an AAFP national commission. Commissions include Continuing Professional Development, Education, Finance and Insurance, Governmental Advocacy, Health of the Public/Science, Membership and Member Services, Quality and Practice.
- Elective Rotations: Department of Health, Utah Health Policy Project, Comagine Health, and Healthy U Medicaid.
