Sports Medicine Opportunities

Core Experiences

All residents will have the following sports medicine training experience.

  • Robust didactic instruction in musculoskeletal (MSK) topics, including training in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for basic MSK conditions during PGY1 didactics.
  • 1 week of MSK ‘bootcamp’ with rheumatology, concentrating on anatomy review and injection technique.
  • 4 weeks of sports medicine clinic during PGY2 year, with sports medicine trained family medicine faculty preceptors; includes use of POCUS and joint injection experience.
  • 4 weeks of ski clinic during PGY3 year, with the option to choose among on-mountain injury clinics at Snowbird, Alta, and Snowbasin ski resorts.

Additional Opportunities

For residents with increased interest in sports medicine training, the following supplemental educational activities are available.

  • Local event coverage opportunities with sports medicine fellowship trained faculty, including at high school football games, in pre-participation sports physicals, with the Salt Lake Marathon and other running events, with Utah Olympic Park events such as bobsled, skeleton, and freestyle skiing, with Olympic Oval events such as short and long track speed skating, and with USA Climbing, US Ski mountaineering, and University of Utah Varsity and Club sporting events.
  • Additional elective opportunities in sports medicine; opportunities include additional time at ski clinics, and with orthopedic clinics, MSK radiology, and rheumatology.
  • Involvement in giving didactic presentations on sports medicine related topics.
  • Scholarly work participation with sports medicine fellowship faculty, including in quality improvement projects, case reviews/presentations, poster submissions, and journal article submissions, including for the Family Practice Inquiries Network (FPIN).
  • Participation in sports medicine journal club (held quarterly).

Sports Medicine Track

For residents with intent on practice focused on sports medicine after residency, a dedicated sports medicine training track is available. Residents will be provided with a sports medicine track faculty advisor and mentor who will help guide them with completing the detailed components of the track, including choosing the rotation experiences that will best prepare them for their specific interests and career goals. Mentors will also be a main point of contact for residents with guidance in preparing for fellowship or job applications and interviews. Residents who complete the following track components will receive acknowledgement of this in their final program letter upon residency graduation, as well as a certificate highlighting this achievement.

  • Completion of at least 4 additional weeks of sports medicine elective rotation time; elective opportunities include additional time in the general sports medicine or ski clinics, as well as with outpatient orthopedic clinics, in MSK radiology, and with rheumatology.
  • Additional completion of at least 2 weeks of a focused MSK ultrasound elective.
  • Participation in at least 6 separate team/event coverage events. Event coverage opportunities including working with sports medicine fellowship faculty for high school football games, performing sports physicals, and providing coverage for the Salt Lake Marathon and other running events, Utah Olympic Park events such as bobsled, skeleton, and freestyle skiing, Olympic Oval events including short and long track speed skating, USA Climbing, US Ski mountaineering, and University of Utah Varsity and Club sporting events.
  • Submission of at least one scholarly work with a faculty member.
  • Presentation during at least one sports medicine journal club with a faculty member.
  • Teaching at least 2 sports medicine related didactics with a faculty member.
  • Attendance at one American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) conference.
